Poker Tips

poker tips that actually lead to winning

money at the table in fact most of the

beginner Texas Hold’em tips that I see

out there focus solely on how to play

poker

like when to bed check or fold which

while important do not necessarily

translate immediately into making

someone a winning player there’s so much

more you have to know besides detailed

strategy to that end my goal for this

video is to give you the advice I wish I

had been given when I was a beginner

understanding each of these seven

beginner poker tips will hopefully make

learning much easier by allowing you to

preempt the mistakes that many beginners

fall victim to so let’s get started

if you want to maximize your chances of

becoming the best player you can

possibly be then you need to check your

belief and luck at the door now don’t

get me wrong over the short or even

midterm anyone can be lucky or unlucky

and run over or under expectation what

you simply must not believe in is the

possibility that someone can be

predestined for good luck or bad luck

there is no room for superstition in

poker all it leads to is a life of

frustration and tilden otherwise the

first big downswing might lead you to

believe in some kind of I don’t know

cosmic conspiracy that maybe the poker

gods simply don’t like you just trust me

on this tip you control your own destiny

and if you’re willing to work hard and

manage your bankroll correctly in the

end succeeding at poker is nothing but a

numbers game

position in poker means you either act

first or you act last when we talk about

playing in position we are talking about

acting after your opponent my number one

fundamental in poker is to try and play

in position more than your opponents

this gives you an informational

advantage that sets you up for success

there are several reasons playing a

position is so powerful first of all you

can control the size of the pot since

you get to act last while in position

you get to decide if that last bet gets

to be put into the pot

number two you have more bluffing

opportunities in pots where no one else

seems interested the person who acts

last often wins the pot by simply

betting as a bluff number three it’s

easier to get value when you have a

strong hand being able to act last

guarantees the ability to put in a bet

on every single Street when out of

position your opponent can choose to pot

control and check back if you happen to

check the flop to them so how do we play

in position more often the simplest way

is to play less hands in early position

and in the blinds and to play more hands

in the seats at the table that will

likely have you playing in position

namely I’m talking about the cut off and

the button reliance on some kind of tell

is a big mistake in poker if you have

ever watched people play poker in movies

or on television you would think that

the way to win is to learn someone’s

quote/unquote tell while physical

mannerisms do occasionally play into the

decision-making process for a live

player it is only one very small piece

of the puzzle when it comes to hand

reading and adjusting to other players

the truth is that learning timing tells

and betting patterns are much more

reliable ways to figure out what your

opponents are doing for example you

might notice that an opponent bets small

with strong hands and bets big when

bluffing this type of information is

invaluable and should be documented

through good note-taking while you play

here are a few other tales to look out

for

taking a long time to act and then

betting bigger raising when you see this

happen

you should look out because this is

almost always a strong hand when you see

somebody taking a long time to act and

then checking usually this means the

player has a marginal hand or draw and

does not want anybody to bet so they’re

taking a long time to act in order in

order to try and sell that they are

strong

next buying in for an odd amount if you

see someone buy in for something like

$ and cents it’s likely going to be

their entire bankroll and they just came

here to gamble it up next openly

complaining about how others play now

these are usually mediocre players who

have maybe they’ve read a book or two

these chronic complainers think that

they already know how to play perfect

poker so make sure you take note of the

things that they say and you will learn

exactly how they play hands and you can

use that to your advantage

since you are watching this video you

are probably the type that understands

the value of study and becoming good at

anything in poker constantly improving

and working to eliminate your leaks is

imperative to success I have found that

the best way to do this is to

compartmentalize the game into smaller

more manageable elements rather than

trying to work on everything at once

it’s best to focus on one thing at a

time

fuse chess as an analogy there are two

games always being played at the table

there is the fairly rigid overriding

strategic game which is based on

tried-and-true fundamentals that have

been proven to lead to winning then

there is the tactical game which is more

dynamic and execute a player’s plans

within the bounds of the overall

strategy in other words understanding

how money is made and lost leads us to a

strategy which in turn gives us insight

on ways to form a profitable game plan

or tactics in short the best way to

improve is to first study and learn the

advanced fundamentals of poker and then

use a simple tactical game at first then

as you gain experience you can

incrementally add more advanced plays to

your game for example you might work on

mastering the most common elements of

the game first like open raising ranges

bets sizing see betting all that stuff

then later on focus more intensely on

the more complicated elements of the

game like three betting for betting

flatting you know that type of thing to

aid in your study there are a few

software programs that I recommend that

you look into first off there’s poker

tracking software there really is no way

around it nowadays in order to

effectively analyze other players and

your own results every serious player

must have poker tracking software my

favorite of all time is Hold’em manager

you also must have an equity calculator

of some sort

poker equity calculators allow you to

compare the equity of various hands or

ranges becoming adept at recognizing

what you’re likely equity is at any

given moment is an important key to

success now when we talk about equity

basically what we’re just talking about

is what is your chance of winning the

hand by the river at any given stage of

the hand that’s your equity

next you want to look in the hand

analysis software now this is a little

bit advanced but if you are like me and

a real poker nerd then you want to

invest in hand analysis software such as

card runners Eevee this program allows

you to do dynamic multi street equity

and Eevee calculations both preflop and

post flop I’ve probably spent I don’t

even know hours or longer on this

software perfecting different elements

of my game it’s that good now for you

online players you’ll want some kind of

table management software it’s really

helpful to automate your table layout as

well as many of your actions while you

play poker that way you can focus more

on playing and less on setting up your

sessions

the plate type means to play very few

hands of weight for so-called strong

hands to get involved while this will

certainly make a losing player lose

money slower it will really do nothing

to help you become a winning player in

today’s games yet still you will hear

this tired old phrase thrown around

every once in a while tight is right my

advice is to ignore this misleading tip

and pretty much any other poker cliche

that you hear a lot of them are based on

poker thirty years ago and have not much

relevance for today instead I recommend

that you learn to understand that

winning poker is about playing a style

of game that best fits the table dynamic

so in order to use this information you

usually want to play a style that is the

opposite of the other players at the

table the key to doing this is once you

figure out what they’re doing you

profile them and then take good notes on

them and then you can use that

information against them in the future

so for example in general when playing

on a table with loose opponents you want

to follow a fairly straightforward and

somewhat tight strategy because this

allows you to often dominate their weak

ranges and gain value when they over

commit with marginal hands the idea is

to play mistake-free poker and make your

money from the errors of the other

players on the other hand if your

opponents are very tight you want to do

the opposite and play very loose in

order to capitalize this usually takes

the form of a robust stealing strategy

which wins by fighting aggressively for

the blinds while your opponent’s are

sitting around waiting for strong hands

fold equity is one of the most powerful

concepts to understand in poker

basically it is the amount of money you

win through aggressive actions such as

betting or raising the best thing is it

does not require you to show down your

cards if you never better raise and

you’re missing out on a lot of profit

due to fold equity in fact based on the

money one through fold equity anytime

you are contemplating an action in poker

you should always consider the

aggressive play first only if the

aggressive play is not profitable should

you even consider a passive play like

checking or calling

as a rule if the aggressive play is

profitable then it is almost always the

best play it’s just like most other

games you have to develop a killer

instinct in order to thrive

I’m sure you’ve heard that adjusting to

opponents is one of the most important

skills to develop as a poker player in

fact we just talked about this just a

minute ago and number five

even so before you can adjust you have

to have a baseline from which to adjust

from I call this a vacuum strategy which

basically just means how you play when

you have absolutely no information for

new players the best way to get started

developing your own Texas Hold’em

strategy is to begin with a very basic

game plan then as you gain experience

start adding on more and more advanced

concepts as you go within no time you

will be exploiting your opponent’s like

a professional

poker is a hard game the fact that there

is so much misleading and downright bad

information out there makes becoming a

winning player more difficult than ever

the goal of these seven beginner poker

tips was to help beginners and

intermediate players get a head start by

learning the things that all top pros

know one last bonus piece of advice that

I will give you is not to take yourself

too seriously

poker is full of players already who

think that they are God’s gift to poker

that type of know-it-all attitude is the

road to underachievement in the game the

faster you can take the ego out the

quicker you can get busy improving and

toning the competition by the way I

wrote an article on this very subject

called sixteen vital poker tips every

beginner should know so if you are
